Dengue

Dengue is a viral disease spread by mosquito bite, especially the day biting mosquitos (Aedes mosquito). An estimated 390 million dengue infections occur worldwide each year, with about 96 million resulting in illness. Most cases occur in tropical areas.

Transmission of Dengue – Dengue fever is transmitted by an Aedes mosquito only when it bites a person infected with dengue virus in their blood and then transmitting it to a healthy individual. It does not spread with direct contact i.e. directly from one person to another.

Onset and Symptoms of Dengue

Usually the onset of dengue starts with the mosquito bite and takes a window period of 4 to 6 days until exhibiting its symptoms. These symptoms may last from 10 – 14 days which may also turn fatal due to the enormous drop in the platelet count.

Symptoms of dengue may include:

  • Sudden onset of fever
  • Prolonged high grade fever
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eye
  • Severe muscular pain
  • Arthralgia (joint pain)
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Skin rash, appearing two to five days after the onset of fever

If symptoms are mild they might be mistaken as common flu; however, serious complications such as dengue hemorrhagic fever may arise if it remains undiagnosed. These symptoms may also progress into massive bleeding, shock, and death, which is termed as dengue shock syndrome (DSS).

Individuals with low immune systems as well as those with a previous history of dengue infection are believed to be at higher risk zone for developing dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Diagnosis of dengue fever is done by serological examinations like IgG, IgM, NS1, ELISA, CBC, etc. are used to evaluate dengue antibodies and platelets so as to diagnose dengue.

Treatment according to Modern medicine

There is no specific line of treatment as dengue is a viral infection. Instead symptomatic treatment and pain killers are used along with anti-pyretic drugs. Rather than the above, anti-viral drugs may be given depending upon the disease and patient’s condition. Apart from this proper rest, plenty of fluid intake and efficient nursing is advised to recover faster.
